What it does
A fast planning estimate
The calculator counts whitespace-separated words in pasted text and divides them by your selected reading or narration rate. Text-to-speech duration is also adjusted by playback speed. The result is a planning estimate: pauses, headings, equations, dialogue, language, pronunciation, and the voice model can make real audio shorter or longer.

How to estimate PDF listening time
If a PDF contains selectable text, copy a representative section into the calculator or use the document’s word count. For a scanned PDF, run OCR first. Exclude repeated headers, footers, references, tables, and appendices that the listener will skip. For a quick estimate, count several typical pages and multiply by the number of similar pages rather than assuming every page contains the same amount of text.
Text-to-speech usually reads continuously, while human narration includes expressive pauses and may pronounce citations, symbols, and abbreviations in longer forms. Use a measured pace for instruction or complex material and a faster pace for familiar review. Playback speed changes duration but does not change how difficult the source is to understand.
Why words per minute is only a baseline
Language, sentence length, vocabulary, formatting, and purpose all affect pace. A novel, a contract, source code, and a mathematical proof with the same word count do not create the same listening experience. Names and acronyms may be spoken letter by letter; equations and tables may require visual inspection; dialogue may introduce longer pauses.
Use the result to reserve time, compare playback speeds, or plan segment lengths. Do not use it as a promise for a finished voiceover. For production, generate a representative minute in the intended voice and language, measure it, then update the plan with that real sample.
A better study schedule for long audio
Divide the estimate into logical sections rather than one uninterrupted session. Twenty to forty minutes of difficult listening followed by recall and source review is often more useful than finishing a long document at maximum speed. Keep the visible PDF available for names, citations, diagrams, and claims that must be checked precisely.
